Historically, the iyaloja of lagos is referred to as “iyaloja of Nigeria”, despite the existence of other iyaloja’s across various yoruba dominated states.
The use of iyaloja of lagos as nomenclature for iyaloja of Nigeria might not be unconnected to lagos space as the commercial mitochondrial of the country. It stands as the apogee and acumen of the commercial hub upon which the economic survival of the country is pillared. As such, it’s only natural that the spheres of capacity and power of the leader chosen to take responsibility for activities of markets in lagos spread to other enclaves; which explain where Iyaloja of Nigeria emanated from.
Across various yoruba market and region they exist, iyaloja is often democratically chosen by her constituents and is thereafter confirmed by the oba or single handedly chosen by the oba himself. In rare situations, like the case of the iyaloja of lagos in 2013, the deceased iyaloja can choose her successor before her death.
The current iyaloja, chief Mrs Folashade Tinubu Ojo came into office in 2013.
She took the mantle of leadership to serve the commodity market women and men in Nigeria from the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, the mother of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National leader of All progressives congress (APC).
Folashade has worked as the Chairman, Lagos State Development Market Board before her emanation as the Iyaloja General. With no doubt, her precedents and track records in market coordination and management make her well suited for this role.
Since resumption of duties, Mrs Tinubu-Ojo has enjoyed a scandal free regime due to her diligent and unbiased discharge of duties. However, naysayers decided to cook up the most flimsy and unworthy situation to tarnish the image of this administration – the issue being raised is the baseless assertions of mismanagement of the Computer Village Market by the Iyaloja General.
As a corper presently serving with the iyaloja General, I can categorically say that mama derives joy in being private and her goal in life as far as I know: is to add value to people’s life, high level of contentment with whatever she has and preserving the good name of her family is sacrosanct to her.
However, the computer village saga has generated some hullabaloo lately that I won’t fail to clarify. The trouble began when Mrs folashade tinubu ojo installed Iyaoja and babaoja of the popular computer village in lagos state.
After their inauguration, around December, I acknowledged several letters of complain around February from some aggrieved associations that existed in the market.
Some of the allegation borders on;
- Lack of synergy by the installed iyaoja.
- High handedness and financial misappropriation by the Installed iyaloja.
- Egoistic, radical, clueless and maltreatment of market traders with “Agbero’s.
On the basis of the enlisted allegations, mama immediately called for a meeting between all stakeholders and associations of the market to find a lasting solution to the menace but as we have it, the covid-19 pandemic stalled the process.
While we were hoping and praying for the pandemic to suffice, so as to regain normancy in the land, “an incongruent blackmail by mischief makers, alleging mama of locking up the market and requesting for #5m from the traders to reopen and also the removal of an erected gate in the market by the traders” has gone viral.
Upon the release of the publication sponsored by one Mr. Ademola Olaifa, the Iyaloja General immediately summoned the Iya Oja of the market to explain the ongoing and the reasons for her inclusion in a jeopardy that is totally unknown to her. The Iyaoja immediately came in with an empathetic and apologetic face frequently chastising herself for putting the Iyaloja General in such awkward position. She affirmed that she wanted to collect fees for market maintenance but did so with no prior authorization and reviews of higher bodies; which in this case is the Iyaloja General. This was disappointing and embarrassing to Mama as the grossly mistake of the Iyaoja is been lambasted on her personality.
On Friday, 5th June, 2020. The stakeholders of the coalition of the computer village market body came to the Iyaloja General office. A representative said truly they had a meeting on the maintenance fee imposed by the Iyaloja and they all decided not to pay the fee and also plan to depose the Iyaoja via all means possible. To their greatest shock also, they affirmed that they saw a publication of the allegations against Iyaloja General written and sponsored by Mr Ademola Olaifa who was als present at the meeting as well.
Mr Ademola olaifa publicly admitted that he made an unforgivable blunder in his publication by indicting iyaloja General instead of iyaloja of computer village. He pleaded with the Iyaloja General in the public to right this blatant wrong of his. However, the deed has been done and the meeting was adjourned till Monday, 16th June, 2020. The proposed meeting seeks to address all the aggrieved associations complaints and also develop a framework to synergize the market for peace to reign.
The foregoing have clearly shown that the Iyaloja General was wrongly accused and the ineptitude of the press to confirm the allegations before publication is totally unprofessional. This is a no to bad press and irresponsible journalism as great journalism entails looking for the truth where lies confronts us in our face.
